Day 34
Construction Update
The first stage is officially in the books! The demolition - and hauling away of copious amounts of wood, stucco, drywall, etc. - of the house is now complete. What’s left is either staying put or temporarily in place so the whole thing doesn’t collapse.
The next phase involves foundation work. The existing foundation needs to be reinforced for the increased load of a second story and a new foundation needs to be added on to certain portions of the front and back. The shaded areas below are the only changes we’re making to the existing footprint of the house:
Here’s a picture of the back of the property. The subfloor has been removed from what will eventually be our new sunken living room.
Brick & Batten Review
Back in July, I ponied up $1,320 to Brick & Batten, an online exterior design rendering service. This was definitely an impulse buy, born out of extreme renovation anxiety and a few glasses of rosé. Here’s the deliverable:
The package also came with names for specific paint colors used and links to products incorporated into the design (like the garage door and the lighting pieces). The main aspect of this service that I found underwhelming (although I knew this going in) is that they only provide one rendering; I think it would be more instructive to see two or three examples with different choices. Still, I have up to six months to request another revision. Something to noodle on.
Tile Date
The Husband had last Friday off from work, so he and I took a little day trip up to Heath Ceramics in Sausalito to check out some options. I’m really leaning into the idea of having one wall of feature (read: pricey) tile combined with inexpensive subway tile in the bathrooms. At the moment, we’re thinking three different shades of blue:
