All the Doors

Selecting a garage door has been surprisingly difficult, especially considering it’s not something I care too much about.

The Husband was not a fan of the modern garage door pictured in the Brick & Batten design below. He had two complaints: 1) he felt it drew the eye too much and 2) he’s absolutely convinced that you can see into those types of garages at night when the interior light is on, no matter how opaque the glass. I was willing to concede the first point.

Left to his own devices, he would happily grab something right off the rack at Home Depot and call it a day. I want something that walks the line between visually interesting and visually overwhelming. I’m currently leaning toward a chevron style painted in a soft black/dark gray to match the roof and the trim of the house. (I used the Clopay design tool to play around with different doors. Overall it’s great, but it’s color options are limited.)

That said, I’m a little nervous about pairing a more traditional garage door with a modern entry door. I’m also unsure if I want the glass panel in the middle or toward the door handle. Basically, I want to be able to see who is at the door but I also want the space to add a big, seasonal, modern wreath in the middle of my door. (This is a thing that I have never actually done but to which I aspire.)

I also signed off on all of the interior doors last week. When we were originally designing the house, I really wanted stained rift white oak doors. Then I got a quote for $43k and thought: MDF will do.
