Subfloors

The subfloor framing of the front and rear footprint extensions began late last week. This development inspired an internet deep dive to get all my burning framing questions answered. In addition to learning the proper names of all these various chunks of wood, I also watched some cool YouTube videos on installing and repairing subfloors.

Since our house was originally built in 1946, its subfloor is comprised of 1”x6” planks laid diagonally across the floor joists. This was standard building practice back then; modern construction uses sheets of plywood, like the one that has been placed over the hole where our old fireplace used to be. Most of the subfloor is in remarkably good shape, with the only notable exceptions being the area around our old back door and our former primary bathroom. Regardless, the existing subfloor will be covered with 3/4” sheets of plywood in order to provide more stability for the new studs and the hardwood flooring.

I was curious about the fate of the remaining studs, since our new ceiling height will be 2.5’ higher. Turns out they just leave them there and place the new, taller studs right next to the old studs. The same goes for the old foundation perimeter.
